92 Green & Red Zinfandel Napa Valley Chiles Valley Vineyards 1997
Ripe and
effusively fruity, with layers of plum, black cherry, raspberry, anise, sage
and cedar, with a long, rich aftertaste that keeps pumping out the fruit.
Drink now through 2004.
One of my
favorite Zinfandel producers, Green & Red Vineyard has again fashioned
elegant, sexy, stylish wines. The 1999 Zinfandel Chiles Valley is a spicy,
medium dark ruby-colored offering with abundant quantities of cherry fruit
intermixed with balsam wood and earth. Lush and medium-bodied, it is ideal
for drinking over the next 2-3 years.
Richer and more textured, the peppery, earthy, spicy, complex 1999 Zinfandel
Chiles Mill Vineyard reveals notes of soy, kirsch, and berry fruit in its
aromas as well as flavors. Medium to full-boded and pure, with fine underlying
acidity, it should be consumed over the next 5-6 years.

GREEN & RED VINEYARD 1998 ZINFANDEL CHILES VALLEY
Green & Red's Zinfandel is a model of balance, elegance, and class. The
1998 Zinfandel Chiles Valley possesses a dark ruby color with light pink at
the edge. An elegant black cherry and spicy-scented nose is followed by medium-bodied,
ripe, lightly concentrated flavors. This well balanced 1998 resembles a premier
cru Cote de Beaune. Nicely Integrated acidity, wood, and tannin provide a
seamless impression in this lighter, finesse-styled wine. Drink it over the
next 3-4 years.
The outstanding
1998 Zinfandel Chiles Mill Vineyard exhibits a
dark ruby/purple color in addition to sweet pure aromas of pepper,
black fruits, kirsch and vanilla. Measured and elegant, this medium to full-bodied
restrained yet concentrated wine unfolds on the palate without a hiccup. It
is a delicious Zinfandel to enjoy over the next 5-6 years.

GREEN & RED VINEYARD 1997 ZINFANDEL CHILES VALLEY
These are both Burgundian-styled, elegant, floral and berry-scented,
harmonious efforts that offer delicious drinking. The expressive 1997
Zinfandel Chiles Valley reveals raspberry and black cherry fruit and soft
medium-bodied, well-knit, elegant flavors. The acidity tannin, and alcohol
are nicely meshed with the fruit. Restrained yet impressive, it will drink
well for 3-4 years.
The 1997
Zinfandel Chiles Mill Vineyard exhibits beautiful purity in addition to a
fragrant, sweet berry-scented nose with hints of spice and subtle earth. Delicate
yet intense, with medium body, impeccable balance, and a long finish, this
wine should drink well for 3-4 years.

89 GREEN
& RED VINEYARD 1997 ZINFANDEL CHILES MILL VINEYARD
The most Burgundian of all the 1997 Zinfandels I tasted, this medium
ruby-colored wine possesses a gorgeously fragrant nose of black
cherries, floral scents, minerals, pepper, and spice. It is medium-bodied,
lush, and sexy, in the style of a premier cru Beaune or Volnay. There is a
nicely-textured finish with lively acidity, sweet fruit, and glycerin. This
Zinfandel Is ready to drink, so readers should take advantage of its considerable
charms.
The latest release from the Napa Valley cult winery Green & Red Vineyard is a vibrant, full-bodied Zinfandel, mostly from 25-year old hillside vines. Redolent of sweet dark berries and dark pepper, the Chiles Mill Zin is a lush, deep red laced with ripe tannins. This is a wine meant for food - a concept California winemakers are just beginning to grasp, but one that owner-winemaker Jay Heminway embraced from the start. A special bottling of his Zinfandel has been the house red at Berkeley's Chez Panisse for the past three years.
